Design Your Own featured

Hey! Are you a bit arty? Do you like crafts and making things your own? Something I LOVE doing is taking boring plain old clothes and customising them. I have lots of fun at places like FashionPlaytes where you can completely change the look of boring clothes by adding colours and sequins and all kinds of things.

Fashion Playtes is improving their selection all the time and adding more and more styles and options for embellishment. They have so many options, but even that can get boring after a while, so I went looking for other places that let you play fashion designer. Here are a few I found:

Converse

Converse- 300 x 250- Barn Animals Kid Collection

Converse are always in fashion. I tried out the customiser and had a lot of fun – you can choose between loads of different colours and prints and change almost everything on the shoe.

Zazzle

Funny T-Shirts from Zazzle

Zazzle is great for basic things like t-shirts and they do shoes very similar to converse. Once again almost everything on the shoe is customisable and you can upload your own images. This has HUGE potential. I love taking photos, especially using Instagram. With Zazzle I can take photos of my dog or a pretty flower and turn it into a t-shirt!

This was all I could find for tweens. Do you know any others? Let me know below!

dreamoutlouda

Have you seen the new Dream Out Loud Spring Collection?  I am loving the absolutely darling jewellery of the new line! Her main focus seems to be on jewellery this time around with plenty of cute and sweet trinkets in the range.

I’m not really that excited about the clothes this time – the clothing style is definitely maturing (only natural I suppose) and is starting to look more teenage than tweenage.  That being said, I think I am in love with Dream Out Loud just for the accessories and the jewellery!  Take this adorable necklace for example:

I love what Selena does with sweet and girly accents like feathers and doves!  Don’t forget to have a look at the huge range of sunglasses too.

Dream Out Loud is definitely a line for the girly girls out there.  Stick with the accessories and jewellery though – Selena has rocked those!

PS.  I nearly forgot!  DoL is still extremely affordable.  Just about everything is under $15 – $20.  Its worth saving up your pocket money for!

Harajuku Mini is out and on sale at Target. I can’t believe the prices (and how cute the clothes are!) Style-wise there are some great statement pieces, but there are also quite a few plain staples – with a twist of course! Harajuku Mini mostly includes clothes for girls, however there are a few items for boys and the age range seems to be infant to teen. A few of my picks:

I love how colourful these pieces are and also the use of over-the-top cute elements like ruffles and strawberries. Incredibly cute Harajuku fashion for tweens. Find it here at Target:

Where do you normally get a good bargain on clothing? Often, its not worth spending a lot of money on tween fashion, because they tend to grow out of them quite quickly. There is a bit of a fallacy too that you can’t get good quality and fashionable clothes at a bargain price but you definitely can!

A few of the most common places to get a bargain include:

  • your local used clothing store
  • big chain shops – Walmart, Kmart, Big W etc.
  • shopping the sales
  • online!

Tips for Shopping at a Used Clothing Store

When you go shopping for second hand clothes, there are a few things you need to keep in mind to get the best possible experience.

  1. Know the size you are looking for – there is nothing more disappointing than looking in the wrong section, finding something amazing and then realizing it doesn’t fit…
  2. Find out when they get new stock in – often they will have a weekly cycle and you will know when to come in and look at all the fresh stuff.
  3. Go in with a plan – Don’t get distracted! If you get sidetracked easily by flashy tops or nice shoes (I know I do!), try to keep to the task at hand. Refuse to look!

Tips for Shopping at the Big Shops

You can get a great deal in tween clothing from the big department stores like Walmart, Target and Kmart and they are even quite fashionable. You will often find celebrity fashion lines in these stores for fairly affordable prices. For example:

  • Walmart has Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s fashion line and Miley Cyrus
  • Target is going to have Harajuku Mini by Gwen Stefani (they also have Hello Kitty!)
  • Kmart has Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez (Big W in Australia) (they also have Rebecca Bon Bon)

Most of the clothing sold here is between $5 and about $26. That seems fairly affordable for new clothing.

Now on to the actual tips.

  • Shop in the right section – this might seem like a no-brainer, but the lines between teen and childrens fashion are getting pretty blurred. If you are seeing thongs, leather and animal print mini-skirts you are probably in the wrong section (but sometimes it can be harder to tell than that!)
  • Know the tweens likes and dislikes – don’t buy a Justin Bieber t-shirt for a tween who doesn’t like him, I don’t actually know any that don’t, but you never know!
  • Trends to follow, or not – some trends are worth following, and some aren’t. Take care in choosing clothes you think your tween will wear for at least the next year – highly trendy tv or character items may not hold their appeal and will not be worn once it becomes uncool and yesterday’s news.

Tips for Shopping the Sales

Do you love a good sale? I know I do. Just about everyone else does too, if you’ve ever been to a huge Boxing Day or Black Friday sale, you know how passionate people can get about finding a great discount! If you are organised, you could probably schedule all your clothes shopping around the big sales. One word of warning – make sure that you are getting a better deal, sometimes shops will put up SALE! signs to get you to come in and buy and the price will be the same or only slightly lower. Make sure its worth it!

Sales to watch out for:

  • End of Financial Year Sales
  • Black Friday
  • Boxing Day Sales
  • Seasonal Sales (end of winter or summer)

These are just a few! If you can think of other sales you love to go to, let us know below!

Tips for Getting a Bargain Online

Ok this is a big one. You can get almost anything online for a great price and you can often find a better price internationally.

Websites of note:

  • eBay – new, second hand, bulk lots, everything you could possibly want can be found at eBay
  • The15DollarStore, Inc. – just like the name, everything under $15 – men’s, women’s and children’s clothing.
  • Amazon.com

Keep an eye on boutique websites too – they often have change of season sales where last seasons top dollar outfits are heavily discounted.

I’ve been thinking about a fairly major issue that I come across time and again when buying my own clothes. Boutique or bargain? Do you buy one gorgeous trendy item or do you buy multiple cheaper items? It makes it harder still when buying for tweens because they outgrow their clothes so quickly.

Boutique clothing for girls is usually higher quality, higher priced and more stylish and attractive than your bargain options. That being said, it’s not for everyone! Some of the companies seem to realise this and target their range towards special occasion wear that often commands a higher price anyway.

Here are some of my top picks from tween boutique brands:

Alex and Alexa

Alex and Alexa are lovely! You notice the quality straight away when you browse their catalogue. The clothes may be somewhat pricey, but they ooze with up-town style.

AlexandAlexa.com

Hartstrings

Hartstrings is one of the original boutique brands for tweens. They are fairly exclusive, however the entire line is available online! Hartstrings has a large range of various items of clothing and a lot of it is designed to match for family photos and what not.

This purple polka-dot dress is really sweet. Very simple, yet striking. There are so many great dresses, skirts, tops and more in the Hartstrings range it was very hard to choose a favourite. They are also having a sale online at the moment… so you might be able to get a bargain!

Click to shop Hartstrings and receive 10% off your entire order.

Unique Vintage

Isn’t this dress adorable?

To Buy or Not to Buy?

While these dresses are all absolutely gorgeous, they do come with a hefty price tag. The average price of a boutique girl’s dress is about $40, which is enough to get two or three or maybe even more items from a bargain shop. However, the quality of style and construction may be worth it to you, either for everyday or for special occasional wear. Also, keep watch for sales, when prices are slashed sometimes down to half price which makes it a bit more affordable.

Part 2 – Bargain Clothing for Girls will be coming up next time!

Design Your Own Clothes For Girls

A new trend in fashion is offering parents and tweens the opportunity to design your own clothes for girls, then have your creation shipped to your door! Girls of all ages love fashion design, and FashionPlaytes allows their creativity free reign.

The main factor that limits fashion designer tools like FashionPlaytes is the number of options. In this arena FashionPlaytes vastly outnumbers its competitors and you are able to design your own clothes for girls with thousands of options and embellishments.

The way it works is this:

  1. Choose your item of clothing – are you going to make a dress? or a skirt? or a shirt?
  2. Choose the style of your item – are you going to make a long-sleeved top? V-neck? round-neck

Then you get into the fun stuff!

Your next options are to choose fabric colour or pattern and start embellishing with designs, applique, embroidery, sequins, rhinestones, ribbons and more! With all the options they have available you are effectively guaranteed to come up with a unique piece every time. Once you’ve finished playing, you can then either order your creation to be made and sent to you or you can save it to your virtual dressing room.

FashionPlaytes is great for tweens who want to express their individuality and get creative with fashion. Parents can rest assured that FashionPlaytes have selected the clothing they offer to ensure that it is age-appropriate and suitable for ‘tweenagers’.

shorts for under dresses

I wish I’d had these shorts for under dresses and skirts when I was a tween. I was very active and I loved the freedom of movement I got from shorts. Whenever I wore a skirt or a dress I felt way too restricted and felt like I had to concentrate on keeping my skirt where it was. Totally not comfortable or fun.

These really cute “Francie pants” I found online would have been perfect. They go over your underwear, so they are basically like thin, soft and stretchy bike shorts to uphold your modesty. They also come in the most amazing prints and colours! Click on the picture to have a look at them here:

These are great for any active girls who like wearing skirts or dresses, for wearing under school uniforms or for any dancers, cheerleaders or gymnasts! Oh and don’t worry if you aren’t a tween – Francie pants sizes start from infant all the way up to women’s small.

dream out loud by selena gomez 2

I like Selena Gomez. She seems to have a good head on her shoulders and to care about more than just partying. Her fashion line, Dream Out Loud, launched in the fall of 2010 and includes a lot of really pretty, girly pieces. The line is made using organic, eco-friendly or recycled materials, which Selena says was very important to her. Selena Gomez has no background in fashion, so she was helped with the creation of the line by Tony Melillo and Sandra Campos. As with most celebrity lines, Dream Out Loud Pieces are designed to go together, mix and match with other pieces and be dressed up or down with different accessories.

TunicOne of my favourite pieces is this tunic top from Dream Out Loud. I love the dark colour and the style, it looks comfortable and would look feminine and pretty layered over jeans or tights.

Ruffles are a great feature of Dream Out Loud. There are few things more girly than a good ruffle! Featured here is a lovely blue and white striped ruffled tank top. Very pretty and casual. A great thing about Dream Out Loud is that most items come in at least two different colours, so you can choose the colours that suit you best.

This pretty Striped Henley Top comes in five different colour stripe combinations and gives a great casual look when teamed with jeans. With its 3/4 length sleeves, it is perfect for cool days!

Dream Out Loud has loads of options for your casual style. What could be more casual than these cut-off denim Bermuda shorts? They look really comfortable and stylish, just the right length and several colours to choose from!

The ruffles return on this pretty, floral and spotted ruched and ruffled dress. This beautiful dress would look sensational with a few accessories alone or worn over tights.

Another cool thing about Dream Out Loud is that its easy to find – its sold through Kmart. Its also very affordable with few pieces costing more than $15.

Where to Buy Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez

Dream Out Loud also has a rather large range of accessories – bags, scarves, hats and belts. Stay tuned for a review of the Dream Out Loud accessory line coming soon!

UPDATE! Here is Selena’s message about Dream Out Loud – it seems that the line is not fully organic or recycled.
